Skógafoss
About
Skógafoss is one of Iceland's most magnificent waterfalls, a thundering 60-metre-wide curtain of water dropping 62 metres along the south coast of Iceland. Legend has it that a chest of gold is hidden behind the falls, and on sunny days a brilliant rainbow arcs across the mist at its base — giving rise to its Icelandic name, as "foss" means waterfall and "skóg" means forest. Visitors can climb 527 steps alongside the falls to a viewing platform with panoramic views over the coastal plain, and the site is the start of the famous Fimmvörðuháls trek.
